View W inside South Shields Roman fort (Arbeia), Tyne and Wear, England, UK, showing reconstructed W gate & columns from the courtyard colonnade of the headquarters building. The gateway was reconstructed in 1988 on the original footings after excavation & recording: two portals with an upper storey flanked by projecting towers which may have had open flat tops with crenellations rather than pitched tiled roofs. A C2ndAD Antonine fort built by the Sixth Legion (Legio VI Victrix) to guard the mouth of the Tyne & secure the E flank of Hadrian's Wall which ended at Wallsend on the N bank of the river. It was converted to a supply depot by emperor Septimius Severus for his northern campaigns into Scotland around AD208-11: there were at least 24 granaries built within the fort.
