Several eminent scientists are present, but the three central figures are the ones at the centre of each row. From top to bottom: astronomer John Herschel (1792-1871); physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867); and Foreign Secretary and future Prime Minister Viscount Palmerston (1784-1865). This meeting opened with Herschel making a valedictory address as President. This artwork is from the 19 September 1846 edition of 'The Illustrated London News'.
