Staff from the NGO Animal Rescue Cambodia vaccinate a dog against rabies at a estimated 800 people a year die of rabies in Cambodia, one of the highest deaths rates per capita in the world. At the root of Cambodia’s endemic are unvaccinated dogs, in a country with one of the highest dog to human ratios in the world. Efforts at achieving herd immunity are significantly disrupted by the 3 million dogs per year slaughtered for Cambodia’s dog meat trade. Some experts have warned that unless the dog meat trade is addressed, rabies will still remain prevalent.
