William George Fargo (1818-1881), American businessman. Fargo began his career by working as a freight agent in New York, USA. In 1842, Fargo met Henry Wells and they founded their own transport company. In 1852, along with Wells, Fargo founded Wells- Fargo and Company to provide a transcontinental express service. Fargo became president of the American Express Company in 1868. Oil painting dating from c. 1855.
