Sunny view under Great Northern and Cornbrook Viaducts to Manchester South Junction Viaduct, Castlefield Canal Basin, Manchester

The Canal Basin at Castlefield, Manchester, is crossed by four large railway viaducts. The southern viaduct in the group (seen here, looking south) is the m span cast iron bridge of the 1849 red bricks Manchester South Junction and Altrincham Railway viaduct across the Castlefield Canal Basin. In the middle of the shot the 1877 Cornbrook Viaduct, a red bricks, wrought iron truss girder construction, was deemed to be in better condition than the Great Northern Viaduct, so was chosen for refurbishment in 1990-91 and is currently used by Metrolink trams going to Altrincham. Right of shot rises the tubular steel Great Northern Viaduct, dating to 1894, and now disused. A view beneath the viaducts, from the east side of the basin.
