The Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute The Hampton Normal and Agricultural Instituteis situated in Elizabeth City County, Virginia, onthe Hampton River, overlooking Hampton Roads. Itis two miles from Old Point Comfort and within easyreach of the town of Hampton, which is on the line ofthe Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. It is reached byelectric cars from Old Point Comfort and from New-port News, at both of which places steamers land fromNorthern and Southern ports. The school stands on a plantation of one hundredand eighty-five acres—the site of Hampton Hospital,one of the military hospitals of the Civil War. Thespot is famous for its beauty and for its historic associ-ations. It is a place peculiarly appropriate for the lo-cation of a school devoted to Indian and Negro educa-tion, being the site of the Indian village of Kecoughtan,from which the Indians were driven by white settlers,and near the spot where the first Negro slaves weresold in America.
