'Lord Roberts Writing in his Tent', c1900, (1901). British soldier Frederick Sleigh Roberts (1832-1914) fought the Boers in South Africa, 1899-1900. He devised strategies to force the Boer commandos to submit, including concentration camps and the burning of farms. 26,370 women and children died in the camps.
