Lalibela market, Amhara region, Ethiopia. A man sells prickly pears in the Lalibela market. To the north of Ethiopia we find the old Roha and the present Lalibela. This holy city draws attention for its stone carved churches that were built in the 11th century under the dominion of the Zegüe dynasty. It was King Gebra Maskal Lalibela who came to this wilderness area but full of reddish basalt rock to excavate. The churches of Libela are divided into two totally different groups thanks to the Jordan River that separates them, but these churches are connected to each other by passages and tunnels that the pilgrims use during their visit.
