Viral conjunctivitis. Close-up of the bloodshot eye of an 80 year old woman with viral conjunctiv- itis. Her eyelid is being pulled down to show the extent of the inflammation. The white of the eye (sclera) is packed with tiny red blood vessels. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the eye. It causes redness, irritation, itching, and occasionally abnormal sensitivity to light. Viral conjunctivitis may occur in epidemics, and it can spread rapidly. It can also be triggered by a cold, sore throat or another viral illness. There is no specific cure for viral conjunctivitis and it usually clears up without treatment.
