Thewomen and children were passed over first, then the perishable load, andthen the rest of the people and the baggage. The animals had to swimfor it and one horse and one ox were swept away and drowned. By threeoclock the passage was completed and they camped for the night of Januaryi, 1776, on the western bank of the river. The three soldiers Anza hadsent to the mission of San Gabriel December 27th now came to repor
