An inspection of the river showed it to be unford--able and Anza was obliged to build a bridge to get his people over, and itwas twelve oclock the following day before this was completed. Thewomen and children were passed over first, then the perishable load, andthen the rest of the people and the baggage. The animals had to swimfor it and one horse and one ox were swept away and drowned. By threeoclock the passage was completed and they camped for the night of Januaryi, 1776, on the western bank of the river.
