Oviposition may continue forover forty days and each female may ^ deposit from twenty to over one hun-dred eggs. The time required for theeggs to hatch depends largely on thetemperature; eggs laid in April whilethe weather is cool do not hatch verymuch before those laid in June. Theegg stage may last from twenty tosixty days. When newly hatched the grubs arescarcely a sixteenth of an inch long andof a very dark brown color, almost asdark as the blackish spots on the soon make their way to the youngleaves, where they begin to eat littleirregular holes through the skin andinto the soft inner tissues. They feedalmost entirely on the upper surface,several grubs usually working on thesame leaf (Fig. 351). Sometimes thegrubs are numerous enough to riddlet
