For forty-seven years there wasnot a church or meeting-house among the Brethren. Thefirst one was built at Germantovvn in 1770, and there werebut few for the next ten or twenty years. There are in exist-ence to-day many old Pennsylvania homesteads, homes ofthe old families, that were built with special referenceto the sanctuary altar, and the accommodation of the« meetings.
