Sculpture of Yehuda ibn Tibbon is located at the confluence of Pavaneras, San Matías,La Colcha streets, entrance to old Jewish quarter, Granada
The sculpture was donated to the city by the historian and philologist Gutierre Tibbón in 1988, a descendant of Yehuda ibn Tibbón, and since then it has welcomed people who visit the neighborhood. Yehuda ben Saúl ibn Tibbón was born in Granada in 1120 in a Jewish family, received education in Arabic and Hebrew. At the age of 28 he left the city due to the Almohad anti-Jewish persecution, taking only his library with him. He went to Italian Provence and later to Marseilles, where he died in 1190. He was, among other things, a doctor, philosopher, poet, and translator, this being his most outstanding facet. He translated countless Arabic texts into Hebrew, making Arabic science accessible to Europe. He also produced original works, including a treatise on grammar and rhetoric and a compendium of moral and ethical advice that included rules for translation, reading, and composition.
