His early training was received inthe public schools and a private academy in Lan-sing, from which he entered the College of Physiciansand Surgeons of Columbia and was graduated withthe degree of Doctor of Medicine in 1878. .As ayoung man he was for a time mailing clerk anddeputy postmaster in the Post-oflfice at Lansing, butsoon after graduation he found professional occu-pation in the Eastern Michigan Asylum at Pontiac,where he was engaged as Assistant Physician in1878. In 1885 he was made Assistant MedicalSuperintendent, and four years later Medical Super-intendent. In 1894 he was offered and accepted.
