An early portrait of Jose Hilario Montoya (1816-1847) , Governor of Cochiti Pueblo and Mayor of Talos, New Mexico. Also known as Pablo Montoya he's seen here in native Indian dress. He became a notable New Mexican politician who was active both in the 1837 revolt against the Mexican government, and in the Taos Revolt of 1847 against the United States, (Mexican–American War). He was the son of Andres Montoya & Victoria Velarde and married Maria Teresa Esquivel. Because of his involvement in the the 1847 revolt he and 14 others were sentenced to death & publicly hung in Taos central plaza.
