China: Zhu De (1 December 1886 – 6 July 1976) at Yan'an, c. 1937. To the right is a young Deng Xiaoping. Zhu De was a Chinese Communist military leader and statesman. He is regarded as the founder of the Chinese Red Army (the forerunner of the People's Liberation Army) and the tactician who engineered the victory of the People's Republic of China during the Chinese Civil War.
