Bird-like dinosaur (Deinonychus antirrhopus), artwork. This dinosaur could reach metres in length and weighed up to 73 kilograms. It lived during the Early Cretaceous, 121-99 million years ago. It had a large, sickle-shaped retractable claw on the second toe of each hind foot. The presence of claws, lightweight bones, sharp teeth and bipedal gait, indicate that Deinonychus was an agile predator. It is thought that Deinonychus and its close relative Velociraptor were feathered due to the discovery of quill indentations on fossilised limbs. The forelimb of Deinonychus also bears strong similarities to the wing structure of birds, strong evidence that birds are descendents of dinosaurs.
