Lieutenant Torrey H. Webb, a army aviator, inaugurates the New York to Boston air mail service on June 11, 1918. During the initial flight, the plane carrying 272 lbs. of mail briefly got stuck in soft earth while landing in Sangus, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. Nobody was injured, and the entire trip took 3 hours and 20 minutes. (Official use only: 19583 89366)
