Nursery web spider fishing with one leg in a pool of rain water on an Alchemilla Mollis leaf

The nursery-web spider (Pisaura mirabilis) is the only member of the Pisaura genus in Britain. They are closely related to wolf spiders and are excellent hunters. They are also known as fishing spiders as they can often be found in damp places or patches of morning dew. They place one leg in the water to attract prey and have the ability to both walk on water and submerge themselves. During courtship the male presents the female with a web wrapped insect gift. The female can often be seen carrying an egg sack during the spring.
