The Edward E. Brickell Medical Sciences Library at Eastern Virginia Medical School, Norfolk, Virginia, USA, Showing the Beazley Foundation Rotunda
This project consisted of the construction of a new 4-story, 65,000 square foot building, located adjacent to the Jones Institute (tied into the existing school), the Brickell Library was built in the midst of busy streets and sidewalks of Sentara Norfolk General Hospital and Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. The Brickell Medical Sciences Library is a state-of-the-art facility housing the school’s resource collections, two electronic classrooms, a large video-conferencing room, a history of medicine area, and a blend of individual and group study areas. The library’s impressive rotunda entrance is shared with an older medical school building, Lewis Hall, which adjoins the library. The building is a stone-clad, concrete frame structure built on a concrete pile foundation, with special features including a domed, sky lit rotunda entrance supported by large concrete columns. The circular steel staircase, glass curtain wall, intricate granite flooring and raised access flooring contribute to the architectural aesthetics and functionality of the structure. It was built with connections and renovations to the existing Lewis Hall academic building without disturbing ongoing operations of the medical school. The library’s rotunda serves as the public “”face”” of EVMS to visitors, students, and staff of the university.
