U/T-^t^^tj^ MEDILL, William, governor of Ohio (1853-56), was born in Newcastle county, Del., in was graduated from Delaware College in 1825,and studied law, removing in 1830 to Lancaster, O.,where he entered the law officeof Philemon Beecher, and wasadmitted to the bar in years later he was electedto the legislature and served sev-eral years, being twice chosenspeaker of the house. In 1838he was elected to congress andre-elected in 1840. In 1845 hewas appointed by President Polksecond assistant postmaster-gen-eral, and also commissioner ofIndian affairs. He was a mau ofsuperior ability and his administration of the In-dian department, he Inauguratedmany needed reforms, and wonthe regard of the Indians by hisjust and kind treatment. At theclose of Polks administration, hereturned to Ohio and resumed thepractice of law. In 1849 he was amember of the constitutional convention and was cho-sen president of that body.
