At the earlj- ageof seventeen j-ears he came to California, by way ofthe plains and arrived in 1859 in the land of having no relatives or friends on this coast, wasobliged to follow the promptings of his own settled in Calaveras County and engaged in min-ing until 1862, when he came to the then Territoryof Nevada, and followed the occupation of silvermining. In 1863 he went in company with Gov. L. R. Brad-ley to Austin, during the Reese River excitement,and assisted in the organization of Nje County,and has since resided in that countj. He was mar-ried to Miss Sophia Ernst, September 20, 1870, alady of cultured tastes, and more than ordinaryability. Mr. Williams is a descendant of an old Democraticfamily, and is himself a Jiickson Democrat of thestrictest kind. His ancestors on his fathers sidewere from Wales, and settled in North Carolina longbefore the Amer
