Wellingore Village, A Lincolnshire village is planning to erect a monument in memory of World War II poet John Gillespie Magee, sign post, private cut

Navenby, Wellingore and Temple Bruer lie at the western edge of Lincoln Heath close to the Cliff. ‘Bruer’ comes from the Norman-French word ‘bruyere’, meaning ‘heath’. These villages are close to the Roman Ermine Street, the road linking London to Lincoln constructed by Army engineers of the 9th and 14th legions during the conquest period. Settlements on the road were restricted to military posts every 10 Roman miles, with stations at Saltersford, Ancaster and Navenby. For centuries, Lincoln Heath enjoyed an evil reputation as the haunt of highwaymen, but in the last 200 years its poor soils have been improved for agriculture. The Knight’s Templar may have enclosed areas of heath to support their manorial ‘granges’. A Lincolnshire village is planning to erect a monument in memory of World War II poet John Gillespie Magee. The poet, who is famous for his poem High Flight, was billeted in Wellingore while serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) 412 Squadron. John Gillespie Magee was born in Shanghai. His father was American and his mother British. He was educated at Rugby School and was fascinated by another war poet - former pupil Rupert Brooke. He wrote his most famous poem, High Flight, a few months before he died. The poem has subsequently been used in a speech by former American president Ronald Reagan and carried into space by astronaut Michael Collins.
