A man beats bamboo stems with a wooden mallet to split them. Bamboo stems and split strips ready for weaving into mats. The dark green outside of the stem is alternated with the white inside to produce a pattern. The matting is very strong and is used as a building material, particularly at the gable ends of houses. Used like this it allows air flow through the roof space where agricultural produce is stored. Bumthang, Bhutan, Drul Yul.
