Lymphocyte undergoing mitosis. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a lymphocyte white blood cell during mitosis (nuclear division). Mitosis is the formation of two daughter nuclei from one parent nucleus. The nuclear membrane has broken down and the chromosomes (red) have condensed. Lymphocytes are involved in the immune system's defence mechanisms, lymph system and antibody production. Mitochondria, which produce energy for the cell, are orange. Magnification: x5000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
