A front view of J72 0-6-0T steam engine 69023 Joem at the Tanfield Railway. North East England, UK

This small tank locomotive, No. 69023 Joem, was a member of a class first introduced by the North Eastern Railway in 1898. Further locomotives of this type were constructed in 1904 by the same company. After the grouping of the UK railway companies following the first world war, the London and North Eastern Railway ordered further batches to the same design between 1920 and 1923. Finally the newly nationalised British Railways ordered batches in 1948 and 1951. Joem is one of the 1951 built locomotives. Most of these locos were finished in a black livery, but in BR days those employed at the principal stations were painted in NER light green, with both the BR and NER crests. Joem is seen in this livery. It is owned by the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG) and is seen here at Marley Hill shed on the Tanfield Railway The occasion was the photographers' evening during the 2010 Legends of Industry gala weekend.
