Paediatric examination. Image 12 of 14. Doctor taking a young girl's blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer. A cuff is placed around the child's arm, which is inflated until the doctor can no longer hear blood flow through her stethoscope. The cuff is slowly deflated until blood flow is heard to resume. The pressure shown on the gauge (doctor's right hand) is the pressure of the pumping heart (systolic). Further deflation gives the pressure of the relaxed heart between pumps (diastolic). Blood pressure is measured in millimetres of mercury (mmHg). For a sequence of images showing a paediatric examination, see M825/831-843.
