Th(*daily supply is 30 millions of gallons ; daily consumption 23 mil-lions, and full capacity of the aqueduct 80 millions of gallons. The first ground was broken on the Washington aqueduct byPresident Pierce, Nov. 8, 1853. It has cost $3,500, Bridge is one of the distinguishing features of this great bridge is 20 feet wide and 420 feet long; a single arch oi220 ft. spans the chasm. It cost $237,000. Capt., now GeneralMontgomery C. Meigs, of the U. S. Corps of Engineers, was theconstructor of this bridge and of the aqueduct. The length of pipe line is 18 miles; 12 tunnels, the longest1,438 feet; total tunnelling, 6,653 feet, and 6 bridges. A stand-pipe of iron 60 feet high was erected in 1877, at 16thMid Boundary sts. n. w. The cost was $37, 133FALLS OF THE POTOMAC. The Little Falls of the Potomac are very beautiful, and areabout 4 miles above Washington, being a series of cascades inall of 37 feet. It is here the Chain Bridge, as it is called, crosses the river. A curious fact is that all the bridges whichhave crossed the Potomac at this point have been called chainbridges, when, in fact, but one was of that construction. Thebridge erected here before 1811 was a chain suspension bridge, and its various successors (of which there have been several)have, in turn, been so called. The present one is a Howe-trussiron bridge, free, and cost $100,000. The Great Falls, as already stated, are some 10 miles abovethe Little Falls, and are wonderfully grand. The rockychannel here is narrowed to 100 yds., and in a series of cascadesthe river descends 80 feet in the course of a mile and a half. TheVirginia shore towers 70 feet of perpendicular rock above thebed of the river. ANAL
