In favorable spots, especially in the warm southwest, the mesquite grows to large size ; and the cactus, which in the north is always low and represented by only a few kinds, in the southwest, as in Arizona, grows in great variety and, in some cases, even to the height of trees (Fig. 24). On account of the extreme dryness ofthe climate, these plants have a severestruggle for existence, and adopt peculiarmeans for protecting themselves.
