He was always activem politics and served one term of three yearsas auditor of Fayette county. He was kind-hearted and generous, always willing to aida neisfhbor in any way possible. He was aRepublican in politics and vv-?s a Quaker inchurch faith, but attended meetings at thePresbyterian church. The family of Swan is of English origin,but the ancestor of the Swans of Pennsyl-vania hereui recorded was one of the one hun-dred English families whom King James ofEngland placed in possession of an equalnumber of confiscated Irish estates. At whatlime Richard Swan came to America there isno record, but he settled in Hanover town-ship, Lancaster county, Pennsylvania, priorto 1738. His sons were: i. James, born 1711,in Ireland, died December, 1741. 2. Moses,of whom further. 3. Joseph, born 1715, re-sided in Franklin county, Pennsylvania. , born 1719, in Ireland; married Jean-nett Shields, and died in Franklin county,Pennsylvania, January, 1773, leaving Richard, born 1725, in Ireland; was a mer-chant of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and wasone of the signers to the non-importationresolutions of 1765. 6.
