We first went to see the old church; the wallsbuilt of Adobe soil, sun-dried, and appeared to bethree or four feet thick and twenty feet from floorto ceiling; the joists supporting the flat roof werepine logs ten or twelve inches in diameter, dressedsmoothly, and hand carved, and placed about twofeet apart, the intervening spaces covered over with Old Church and Jail, July, 1894. small pieces cut from saplings, the bark having beenremoved when the sap was flowing; these pieces werelaid on the joist diagonally, each alternate row be-ing reversed; then there were three or four great. Mexican Prison. 489 hand-carved braces, the carving rude to be sure; butthe braces were proportioned to the immense walls,and seemed to give a kind of rude grandeur to theold seatless room. While we were there the Mexicanwomen, a number of them came in, and kneeled onthe bare floor in front of the gilded altar and de-voutly crossed themselves, and said their prayers tothe Mother of Christ, and soon silently retired. In the rear of this old house, and about thirtyfeet from it was a space of ground enclosed by anadobe wall eight or ten feet high, and containingnear one-fourth of an acre of ground; this was wherethe bull fights took place; adjoining this was theprison for criminals—also enclosed by adobe wallsfive feet thick, and about fifteen feet high, and enclos-ing about as much ground as that where the bullfights took place.
