Amid the brilliant galaxy of great ophthalmologists andphysicists of the last century who elevated ophthalmologyto its rightful place in medicine, one of the most notablecharacters is that of John Green. Born and reared amid therugged hills of Massachusetts, he possessed a steadfastnessof nature during the whole course of his long and usefulcareer which evidenced the strong influence of this earlyenvironment. Also, he was almost by inheritance a physi-cian, being the fifth in a succession of physicians in thefamily during a period of a hundred and thirty-five Uke manner might we account for a certain pioneertendency shown in his love of investigation and the spiritof adventure which influenced him to take up his abode inthe then far west and establish himself in a region wherepure ophthalmology was practically Born tothe highest motives only, time and circumstance wroughtno influ
