EDWARD RODOLPH JOHNES, Lawyer, wasborn in Whitesboro, Oneida coimty, NewYork, September 8, 1852, son of William Pierson. EDWAKU R. JOHNES and Anna Louise (Gold) Johnes. He is descendedfrom Edward Johnes, (son of Richard and AliceJohnes, of Somerset, England), who accompaniedGovernor Winthrop to Boston in 1629, and in 1644moved to Southampton, Long Island; also fromGovernor Gold, of Connecticut, General Sedwickand Colonel Talcott, all of whom were actively con-cerned in Colonial affairs. The Hyde Genealogystates that Sir Francis Johnes, Lord Mayor of Lon-don in 1620, was also a member of the family. Hisearly education was directed by Rev. Dr. ThomasReed, of Geneva, New York, who prepared him forCollege, and he took his Bachelors degree at Yale with the Class of 1873, of which he was spending a year in study and travel abroad,he entered the Columbia Law School, graduating in1876, and commencing the practice of law
