Spinal disc implant. 3D coloured computed tomography (CT) scan of a the lumbar spine of a 45-year-old patient, showing a prosthetic disc (blue) implanted to correct a damaged intervertebral disc. Front of body is at left. The damaged disc has been surgically removed and replaced by the mechanical prosthesis. Damaged intervertebral discs can impinge on nerves and the spinal cord, and in serious cases surgery such as this is performed.
