When the enemy made a dash to capture the Unionpickets, they were calculating on receiving a volley from the regular Spring-field, one shot, rifles; after they received one volley, they made a rush toadvance as far as possible while they supposed the guns were beingre-loaded, but to their utter astonishment there was no stopping to load, butvolley after volley met them in quick succession. All engaged in thatcharge, who were not killed, were captured; one of the prisoners, in passingdown the line, said: Say, Yanks, what kind of a thing is it that you fellows wind up and itshoots right along all night?
