An early 19th century illustration of Night-blooming cereus, native to Arizona and the Sonora Desert. The name refers to a large number of flowering ceroid cacti that bloom at night. The flowers are short lived, and some of these species, such as Selenicereus grandiflorus, bloom only once a year, for a single night. This artwork for Robert John Thornton's "The Temple of Flora" in 1807, was printed, for the publisher, by T. Bensley, London, England.
