The Russo-Japanese war : medical and sanitary reports from officers attached to the Japanese and Russian forces in the field, General staff, War office, April 1908 . for the purpose from the ChineseGovernor, and subsequently, too, from the Commander-in-Chiefof the Japanese Manchurian Armies. The overcrowding and destitution amongst these refugees hadgiven rise to severe epidemics. Typhus fever, scarlet fever ofa malignant type, measles, and small-pox were specially preva-lent. There was little enteric fever, however. The missiondoctors had also under their charge a number of Chinese men, women and children, who had been wounded. There had beenmuch fighting along the walls of the city, to the south-east,where the mission premises were, and shrapnel and rifle bulletsentered the compounds of the Chinese houses in this neighbour-hood. A number of serious injuries were also seen that had beencaused by lads and children playing with hand-grenades thatthey had found, and the nature of which they did not under-stand. Many injuries also occurred from the handling of liveshells, numbers of which could be seen all over the area of theoperations. I 5 I ^ I I r. 1II M Jo N S S •I I i x I O cc To fax* page/ £20.
