'Church at Magdala, with Theodore's grave', Ethiopia, c1868 (late 19th century). Magdala was the site of a battle in 1868, fought between the British under General Robert Napier and the Abyssinians commanded by Emperor Tewedros (Theodore) II. After he was defeated, Tewodros committed suicide. From Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol IX.
