An old 1933 photograph of the Seaview hotel at John O Groats, Scotland, (now the John o' Groats House Hotel / The Inn At John O’Groats) seen from the beach. John O'Groats takes its name from Jan de Groot, a 16th century Dutchman who once operated a ferry from the Scottish mainland to British culture, John O'Groats is linked with Land's End (Cornwall) being at the extreme opposite end of the country. Bikers, walkers, motorists etc, often make the symbolic journey (either way) as a kind of non-religious pilgrimage, sometimes in order to raise cash for charity fundraising
