The famous sculpture "La Pietà" by Michelangelo in St Peters, Rome

The famous sculpture "La Pietà" is inside the Basilica. In 1499, when he started the sculpture, Michelangelo was only 22 years old. The block of marble was personally taken by Michelangelo from Carrara and he succeeded in creating a sculpture that is very lifelike .The young Mary is holding in her arms the body of Jesus right after he was taken down from the Cross after crucifixion. It is said that one night Michelangelo, who not used to sign his works, went to the Basilica and signed the sculpture writing: "Angelus Bonarotus Florentinus Faciebat", hearing some visitors saying that it was the work of Gobbo di Milano.
