Stratigrapbic model for a low coast undergoing erosional shoreface retreat, Pleistocene sands, whose erosion provides material for the surficial sand sheet. The basal layer of the surficial sand sheet is a thin. discontinuous gravel (Powers and Kinsman, 1953; Belderson and Stride, 1966; Yeenstra, 1969; Xorris, 1972) or shell hash rich in backbarrier and beach species (Fischer, 1961; Merrill et al., 1965; Milliman and Emery, 1968; Field, 1974). More exotic clasts are clay pebbles eroded from Early Holocene lagoonal deposits, elephant teeth (Whitmore et al., 1967), and concretions from Tertiary strata (Stanley et al., 1967). The basal gravel is rarely more than a meter thick. It is SUCCESSIVE POSITIONS OF SHORE EACE DURING INTERMITTENT TRANSGRESSION.
