After segmentation has occurred, and after the interior ofthe ovum has become reduced to a granular mass, around whichis a membrane composed of a single layer of cells, at a certainpoint—the embryonal area—in this membrane there appears athickening, by a heaping up of the cells. Finally this mass ofcells resolves itself into two layers (ecto- and entoderm), andbetween these two appears another layer of cells (mesoderm). The outer layer, the ectoderm, sends a prolongation aroundthe whole interior surface of the ovum, and this layer receives a eg c ec.
