The alleeted muscles are the seat of fihrillary twitchinj^s. Thecomplete reactions of degeneration are not present, although some modalchange and partial reaetion may be seen in advanced eases. There is noanustiusia of any kind, nor are the sphincters usually affected. Scoliosisdoes not oct-ur. In cases in which the neck muscles are greatly wastedthere may be head-drop, but this symptom occurs more fretjuently inamyotrophic lateral sclerosis. As a rule, there are no bulbar or oculomotorsymptoms. Tlie disease may be very chronic, lasting for many years. Someaberrant forms
