The guided-missile frigate USS Vandegrift (FFG 48) leads a formation with the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force destroyers JS Murasame (DD 101) and the JS Harusame (DD 102). Vandegrift is underway in preparation for Cooperation Afloat Readiness and Training (CARAT) 2012 Philippines. CARAT is a series of bilateral military exercises between the Navy and the armed forces of Bangladesh, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Timor Leste joins the exercise for the first time in 2012.
