LOW, MEDIUM AND HIGH HEAD DEVELOPMENTS 109 in diameter. The surge tank riser joins the distributer with easy curves, but a novel and cheaper connection is made to the penstock intakes, 8 diameter. This is a simple flanged and riveted joint, which would, with-out some modification, produce eddies and loss of head. To prevent such, wooden fillers suitably rounded off are secured around the mouths of theintakes inside the distributer. This distributer is a steel pipe, ^g in. thick, inclosed in concrete. ■ Surge Tank.—The surge tank is one of the largest of its type yet con-structed. It consists of a cyhndrical shell, 50 ft. in diameter and 80 , surmounting a hemispherical bottom which adds 25 ft. to its height.
