T IS in the Thebald, on the heightsof a mountain, where a platform,shaped like a crescent, is sur-rounded by huge Hermits cell occupies thebackground. It is built of mud andreeds, flat-roofed and doorless. Inside are seen apitcher and a loa^ of black bread; in the centre, ona wooden support, a large book; on the ground,here and there, bits of rush-work, a mat or two, abasket and a knife.
