This 1901 photo show a nickel steel armor plate ingot cast for the port plate of battle ship Iowa. Noted on the ingot is its weight: 273,500 lbs. The ingot was manufactured by the Bethlehem Steel Company, which, during WWI and WWII was a major supplier of armor plate and ordnance. The USS Iowa was launched in 1942 and decommissioned in 1990. It was nicknamed "The Big Stick" and its motto was "Our liberties We Prize, Our Rights We Will Maintain." She was the only ship of her class to serve in the Atlantic Ocean in World War II. She also served in the Pacific in WWII and she served in the Korean War. 20th century
