California Gray whales trapped in ice near Barrow, Alaska, October 1988. Rescue effort: series of holes cut in the ice between the stranding area near the coastline, and the open sea. Local Inuit people cut slabs of ice with chain-saws; crew pushes slabs under pack ice, current drives them away. Two of the original 3 trapped whales were eventually rescued.
