Steamers are required to slow down to six miles perhour, in passing through, thereby preventing the wash of its sides. Thesteamers of this line do not stop at the Flats, the current being swiftand the wharves too short to moor a long steamer Second Ward School, near St. Clair Mineral Springs. A mile further up the channel, Joe Bedor, a French squatter andfisherman, entertains those who prefer less restraint and more commonfare, than is found at the more pretentious Star Island. At the bend,on the east side is located the Canadian Club House. This propertyincludes the entire flats on this side of the channel, and is leased fromthe Canadian government. The members of this club reside mostly atToronto and Ottawa. About two miles farther on is the beautiful river, which is 48 miles long and 1|- wide. Steamers keepin the middle of the river, unless they have landings to make, andtourists greatly enjoy this portion of the trip.
