Female disciple, Mary Magdalene, recognises Jesus after the Resurrection and kneels before the Risen Lord. Square detail of a Romanesque stone capital, sculpted in around 1190 AD, in a cloister at a Benedictine monastery, the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca in Huesca province, Aragon, Spain. The artwork is one of 20 Romanesque capitals in this monastery cloister by the same sculptor, known as The Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Aguero.

Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña, near Jaca, Huesca province, Aragon, Spain: Mary clings to Jesus after the Resurrection. This New Testament scene is on one of the 20 capitals carved here by the same sculptor, known as The Master of San Juan de la Peña or Master of Aguero. According to the Gospel of John in the New Testament of the Christian Bible, Chapter 20, when Mary Magdalene initially sees Jesus outside his empty tomb, she fails to recognise him and thinks he is the gardener; when Mary does finally recognise Jesus, he tells her not to touch him: “And when she had thus said, she turned herself back, and saw Jesus standing, and knew not that it was Jesus. Jesus saith unto her, Woman, why weepest thou? whom seekest thou? She, supposing him to be the gardener, saith unto him, Sir, if thou have borne him hence, tell me where thou hast laid him, and I will take him away. Jesus saith unto her, Mary. She turned herself, and saith unto him, Rabboni; which is to say, Master. Jesus saith unto her, Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father: but go to my brethren, and say unto them, I ascend unto my Father, and your Father; and to my God, and your God.” The Benedictine monastery of San Juan de la Peña was founded under a bulging rock overhang in the Central Pyrenees by hermit monks fleeing the 10th century expansion in the Moorish occupation of Spain. It stands on the Camino de Santiago or Way of St James Christian pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia.
